Decanters are recommended for old and young wines alike. For old wines, especially age- worthy red wines, sediment is a desirable by-product and often indicates that the wine was made with minimal intervention. However, sediment can have a bitter, gritty flavor and texture. For this reason, decanting old wines is recommended to separate the wine from the sediment
For young red wines, especially those that are high in tannin, exposure to air before serving can help soften flavors and release aromas, similar to the swirling of wine in a glass. Decanters allow wine to aerate by exposing a wide surface area of the wine to the air.
